About
Program Description
This fellowship provides general pediatricians with structured training in diagnosing and managing common pediatric neurological conditions. Fellows rotate through shadowing, supervised care, and increasing clinical autonomy. With a focus on outpatient neurology, the curriculum includes direct mentorship by UCSF Child Neurologists, hands-on patient experience, and electives in neurology subspecialties, neuroimaging, and developmental assessments. The fellowship cultivates advanced clinical reasoning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and patient-centered communication.
Mission
Our mission is to bridge the gap between general pediatrics and pediatric neurology by equipping pediatricians with the clinical expertise and confidence to manage neurologic conditions commonly encountered in practice. The program aims to improve access to neurologic care through education, communication, and systems-based care, ultimately enhancing outcomes for children with neurological needs.
Details
This one-year program includes three phases:
- First 4 months: Fellows shadow child neurologists in the UCSF Pediatric Brain Center and Bay Area satellite clinics.
- Second 4 months: Fellows begin supervised clinical care, focusing on new patient encounters.
- Final 4 months: Fellows act as independent providers with limited oversight, managing both new and follow-up cases.
Conditions covered include headaches, seizures, functional neurologic disorders, cerebral palsy, tics, developmental delays, and brain injury. Elective rotations enhance skills in neuroimaging, developmental evaluations and management.
Throughout the year, fellows participate in didactics, procedural training (e.g., advanced lumbar puncture techniques), and complete a scholarly project. Mentorship is a core component, with fellows paired with 1–2 UCSF Child Neurologists for progressive skills development.
Research Opportunities
Fellows will complete a scholarly project and may participate in ongoing clinical or quality improvement research within the Pediatric Brain Center.
