About
Program Description
The UCSF General Neurology fellowship was established by John Engstrom and Jessamyn Conell-Price to create and promote academic outpatient neurology training. This is a one-year program. Accelerated programs can be considered on an individual basis. The program is a non-ACGME fellowship. There is an opportunity to have EMG/NCS training and accreditation.
Mission
The goal of the UCSF general neurology fellowship is to provide advanced training and mentorship for neurology graduates who want to innovate and improve outpatient neurology practice. Our fellowship is a hub for trainees interested in becoming leaders as clinician-educators, master clinicians, or improving clinical practice and policy in novel areas. We have clinical tracks developed for clinician-educators, neuro-palliative training, and neurogenetics. We will also support fellows interested in novel areas of neurology or practice that bridge different specialties.
Goals for our fellows include preparing for transition to academic faculty, building an education portfolio, fostering involvement in impactful research, and developing leadership skills.
Details
Clinician-educator Track (1 year)
The clinician-educator fellowship track provides training in advanced clinical practice in comprehensive outpatient neurology, gaining expertise with procedural skills, advanced subspecialty care, non-neurology specialty care, and health systems approaches to streamlining neurology care in the outpatient setting. Fellows will actively participate in weekly didactic sessions, general neurology case conferences, guest speaker series, and journal clubs. Fellows also have the opportunity to participate in our clinic leadership rounds and meetings to understand and contribute to multidisciplinary care. As fellows rotate through other neurology and non-neurology specialties, they will participate in complementary didactics. The goal of this fellowship pathway is to provide training needed to launch a leadership role as a generalist in academic practice.
The year generally consists of the following components:
- 15% time with UCSF complex diagnosis clinic with tertiary or quaternary referrals
- 15% time General Neurology continuity clinic, with triage to select cases of particular relevance for the clinical project
- 5-25% procedures (EMG/NCS, LP with ultrasound guidance, neuromuscular ultrasound, botulinum toxin PREEMPT protocol for migraine and spasticity, greater occipital nerve blocks, etc).
- 25-45% Month-long clinical rotations with neurology and non-neurology specialties
- 1 month of vacation
Neurogenetics Track (1 year)
The goal of this fellowship track is to provide advanced training for adult neurology fellows who are interested in advancing skills, knowledge, and care for adults with developmental disabilities and neurogenetic conditions. Focus will also be given to child-to-adult transitions for childhood onset neurogenetic conditions and improvement of neurogenetics diagnostic evaluations. This fellow will work with adult geneticists, genetic counselors, neuro-geneticists, child neurology specialists, and adult neurologists to gain expertise in this area.
Research Opportunities
One-fifth of fellowship time is reserved for clinical or research projects; the fellowship program will support connection with mentors within neurology, neuroscience or other areas of clinical practice and health policy.
